The After-School “Flush It Out” Routine

Kids getting out of school.

There’s a moment right after school that most families overlook. Kids walk in the door and go straight back to sitting. Snack, screen, shut down. And from there, everything starts to feel harder than it should. Energy drops, patience gets shorter, and even simple things turn into a battle.

It’s not because they’re exhausted. It’s because their body hasn’t had a chance to shift gears after being focused and still for hours.

Before the couch becomes the default, give them a chance to move. Keep it simple:

  • A glass of water

  • Step outside

  • 10–15 minutes of movement

Bike rides, running around, shooting hoops, or just playing all count. It doesn’t need structure or pressure. Just movement.

This gets blood flowing, wakes the body back up, and changes the tone of the entire evening. You’ll notice it quickly. They’re less irritable, dinner goes smoother, and bedtime doesn’t feel like a fight.

You don’t need to control the whole night. You just need to change how it starts.
