Side by Side Builds More Than Face to Face

Children walking side by side.

There’s a reason some of the best conversations don’t happen sitting directly across from one another. They happen while walking. While moving. While simply being side by side.

When kids aren’t face to face, something shifts. The pressure softens. There’s less need to perform, less self-awareness about being watched or evaluated. And in that space, they open up in a different way.

You’ll notice it in small, quiet moments. Conversations become more natural. Thoughts come out more freely. There’s less filtering, less hesitation. They’re not trying to say the “right” thing, they’re just talking.

This is one of the most overlooked parts of development. We often think connection has to come from structured conversations or intentional sit-downs, but that’s not always where it’s built. More often, it comes from shared movement. From doing something alongside one another. From simply being in it together.

This time of year naturally gives us more of those opportunities. More light in the day. More space to be outside. More moments where kids can move, explore, and connect without it feeling forced.

At Apogee, we don’t try to manufacture connection. We focus on creating the kind of environment where it can happen organically. And when it does, it’s usually not loud or obvious.

It looks simple. It looks easy.

But it’s in those side-by-side moments that something meaningful is being built.
