The Shift That Happens This Time of Year

There’s a shift that happens this time of year that’s easy to overlook. The days get longer, energy starts to come back, and children naturally want to be outside more. But underneath those surface changes, something deeper is happening. This is often the time of year when children begin to seek more independence.
You may notice it in small ways. They want to try things on their own more often. They ask more questions. They may even push boundaries a bit more than usual. Rather than seeing this as something to correct, it can be helpful to recognize it for what it is: a sign of growth. It’s an indication that they are ready for more responsibility, more challenge, and more ownership in their day-to-day experiences.
At Apogee CT, we try to meet that shift with intention. When a child is ready for more independence, the environment matters. Growth tends to accelerate when children are given the space to move, to explore, and to work through challenges in a supported way. This time of year, you’ll often see more hands-on learning, more movement, and more opportunities for children to take initiative, not because the season changed, but because the children are ready for it.
Most children right now are not looking to sit more or be directed more closely. They are looking to do more. To test themselves, to explore their capabilities, and to engage more actively with the world around them. When that need is met in the right environment, confidence begins to build naturally. Not from being told they are capable, but from experiencing it for themselves.
This can also be a helpful perspective for families as routines begin to shift over the next couple of months. Instead of focusing on how to keep everything the same, it may be more useful to ask where there is room to allow for growth. Often, this doesn’t require a major change. It can be as simple as more time outside, more responsibility in small daily tasks, or more opportunities for children to try, struggle, and try again.
This season naturally invites growth. When we recognize that and create space for it, we often see meaningful changes without needing to force them.
At Apogee CT, that is what we aim to support each day. Not just academic progress, but the steady development of confident, capable, and independent young people.
