Balance Builds Strength

Balance is an important part of physical health, but it's easy to overlook. Children use balance every day when they run, climb, play sports, navigate stairs, and simply move through the world.

The good news is that balance doesn't require a special workout. Everyday play can challenge the body to coordinate movement, strength, and stability while helping children become more confident in how they move.

Practical Tips

  • Make it a game. Try walking heel-to-toe, standing on one foot, or balancing a small object while walking.

  • Use the playground. Climbing, swinging, stepping, and navigating playground equipment naturally challenge balance and coordination.

  • Try different surfaces. Walking on grass, sand, or other safe uneven surfaces gives the body new challenges.

  • Add movement to routines. Encourage children to balance while putting on shoes, reach and stretch while getting dressed, or practice controlled movements during play.

  • Go barefoot when appropriate. Safe barefoot play at home or outdoors can help children develop awareness of how their feet connect with the ground.

  • Celebrate progress. Balance improves with practice. Focus on effort and improvement rather than how long a child can hold a position.

Balance is more than standing on one foot. It helps children move with control, respond to changes around them, and feel confident in their physical abilities.

When parents make balance part of everyday play, children are building strength and coordination without even realizing they're exercising. Sometimes the healthiest habits are the ones that simply feel like fun.
