Healthy Hacks for Parents: Posture Matters
Posture Matters

Children spend a surprising amount of time sitting—at school, doing homework, eating meals, and using screens. Over time, those hours can make it easy to develop habits that leave the body feeling stiff and uncomfortable.
Good posture isn't about sitting perfectly all day. It's about helping children become aware of how they hold and move their bodies, while giving them regular opportunities to stretch, move, and reset.
Practical Tips
Raise screens when possible. Position tablets or screens closer to eye level so children aren't constantly looking down.
Keep feet supported. When sitting, encourage children to keep both feet comfortably supported rather than dangling or twisting.
Take movement breaks. A few minutes of walking, stretching, or simply standing can break up long periods of sitting.
Make backpacks comfortable. Use both shoulder straps and adjust the backpack so it sits comfortably against the child's back.
Encourage natural movement. Climbing, crawling, reaching, balancing, and playing help children develop body awareness and coordination.
Check in without nagging. Instead of repeatedly saying "sit up straight," ask children to notice how their body feels and find a comfortable position.
Healthy posture is really about healthy movement. Children don't need to hold themselves rigidly—they need opportunities to move, strengthen, stretch, and become aware of their bodies.
When families make movement breaks and body awareness part of everyday routines, children learn an important lesson: taking care of your body starts with paying attention to what it needs.
