Every parent wants to help their child succeed. When they struggle with homework, forget something important, or run into a problem with a friend, our first instinct is often to step in and fix it. After all, we want to protect them from frustration and disappointment.
But some of the greatest learning happens when children have the chance to solve problems for themselves.
Problem-solving is a skill that develops through practice. It grows when children are given opportunities to think critically, try different approaches, make mistakes, and adjust along the way. While it can be tempting to provide the answer, asking thoughtful questions often teaches far more than giving quick solutions.
Children who learn to solve problems begin to trust themselves. They discover that challenges aren't something to avoid—they're opportunities to learn. Every obstacle they overcome builds confidence, resilience, and independence.
At Apogee CT, we intentionally create opportunities for learners to think independently and take ownership of their learning. Rather than simply providing answers, our guides encourage learners to ask thoughtful questions, test new ideas, and discover solutions through experience. It's not about getting every answer right the first time—it's about building the confidence and resilience to keep learning.
Throughout the year, we see this happen in many different ways. Learners collaborate on projects, navigate disagreements, test new ideas, and work through unexpected setbacks. These moments may not always be easy, but they often become the experiences that shape the greatest growth.
As parents, one of the most valuable gifts we can offer is the chance to let our children wrestle with age-appropriate challenges. Whether they're figuring out how to organize their schoolwork, earning money for something they want, or finding a solution to a problem around the house, every experience helps strengthen their ability to think for themselves.
Because long after children forget the specific problem they solved, they'll remember something even more important.
They'll remember that they were capable of solving it.
